In today’s globalized world, English has become the most widely used language for communication. This has resulted in a growing demand for individuals who are proficient in English. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an international standard for assessing the English language skills of non-native speakers wishing to study or work in an English-speaking environment.

There are many IELTS coaching centers available that helps you to get prepared for the exam but it’s better to research before choosing any institute.

What is IELTS?

Many people think that IELTS is a test of how well you can speak English. This is not the case. IELTS assesses how well you can read, write, and listen to spoken English. IELTS is not just for students or job seekers, it’s also used by immigration authorities to determine if you are eligible to live and work in a country where the local language is English.

It is accepted by more than 9,000 organizations in over 140 countries. The IELTS is a two-part exam: Academic and General Training. The Academic module assesses the language skills needed for higher education and professional development, while the General Training module assesses the language skills needed for everyday life in an English-speaking environment.

Pattern of IELTS Exam

There are 2 types of tests available: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training and have 4 sections, reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The grades for both tests are computed in the same way.

On the same day, you will take the first three sections of the exam in the following order: ielts reading, ielts writing, and ielts listening (there are no breaks between these tests). Depending on local regulations, your ielts speaking test will either take place that day, two to seven days beforehand, or later.

IELTS Listening Test

The IELTS Listening test is made to evaluate a variety of listening abilities, including your capacity to comprehend primary concepts and particular information, identify the perspectives, attitudes, and goals of speakers, and follow the progression of an argument.

In this test, the individual gets 4 recordings to listen and based on his/her answer, the marks will be evaluated.

  • Recording 1: a two-person conversation taking place in a typical social setting.
  • Recording 2: a monologue presented in a typical social setting, such as a speech highlighting neighborhood amenity
  • Recording 3: a discussion between up to four individuals taking place in an educational or training context, such as a university teacher and a student debating an assignment
  • Recording 4: an intellectual monologue, such as a university lecture

In this, the individual must answer 40 questions in 30 minutes, and extra 10 minutes will be given to transfer your answer sheet.

Tasks: Multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, and sentence completion are just a few of the question types that are used.

Marks: One mark is awarded for each accurate response. The IELTS 9-band scale is used to convert scores from 0 to 40. There are complete and half bands for reporting scores.

IELTS Speaking Test

When taking the IELTS Speaking examination, you will converse with a trained examiner. The test is interactive and mimics real-world circumstances as closely as possible. The test will be recorded and may be administered in several accents. For both the IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests, the IELTS Speaking test’s subject matter is the same. A wide range of skills are intended to be evaluated by the IELTS Speaking test.

To demonstrate your ability to effectively communicate opinions and information on common subjects and experiences, the examiner will ask you a series of questions, require you to speak in-depth about a subject using appropriate language, cohere your thoughts, and express and defend your opinions, analyze, debate, and hypothesize on problems.

Time: 11–14 minutes

Marks:  IELTS examiners with the appropriate credentials will evaluate your performance during the exam. The four evaluation criteria—fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation—will determine your grade. Whole and half bands are used to report scores.

IELST Reading Test

The IELTS Reading test is meant to evaluate a variety of reading abilities, including how well you can read. You’ll need to read quickly, effectively, and with time management. In your IELTS Reading test, you will be required to read three distinct passages and answer pertinent questions. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training examinations have separate Reading test topics.

Following abilities should be analyzed during the reading test:

  • read a passage to determine its overall meaning.
  • reading for important points
  • read carefully to get implication and suggested meaning
  • to understand a writer’s viewpoints, attitudes, and goals, pay attention to how an argument develops.

Time: 60 Minutes including transfer time

  • Create a suitable response.
  • organize concepts

Time: IELTS Writing takes 60 minutes to complete. Give Task 1for 20 minutes, and Task 2 for 40 minutes. You’ll have to control your own time management, so make sure to move on to Task 2 after 20 minutes.

Task: 2 Tasks. For Task 1 and Task 2, you must write at least 150 and 250 words, respectively.
